Nanoen – If we want to have a green, clean and safe vegetable garden while still being able to save money, then composting is an easy-to-apply method for households that Nanoen wants to introduce.

After classifying household waste as instructed in the previous article, NANO Environment Technology – Construction Limited Liability Company (hereinafter referred to as Nanoen) would like to share the simple Compost composting process and technique that can be done at home from organic waste. If we want to have a green, clean and safe vegetable garden while still being able to save money, Compost composting is an easy-to-apply method for households.

Organic fertilizer (also known as Compost) is organic matter that has been decomposed and recycled into a type of fertilizer to improve the soil. This type of fertilizer is very rich in nutrients, providing beneficial microorganisms, increasing soil fertility, plants... especially without causing environmental pollution.
Organic fertilizer brings benefits to the soil such as: conditioning the soil, making fertilizer, adding important humus or humic acid (an important component of humus, the main organic part of the soil), and as a natural pesticide for the soil. Here is how to make organic fertilizer from household waste that we can apply at home:

Step 1: Sort waste, choose organic waste to make fertilizer at home

Organic waste contains carbon and nitrogen to provide nutrients for plants. However, it is necessary to classify organic waste into two types: green organic waste and brown organic waste.

+ Green organic waste includes: tree residue, leftover fruit, hair, grass clippings, animal manure, coffee grounds.

+ Brown organic waste includes: straw, rags, newspapers, toilet paper, tea bags, eggshells.

Note: When making organic compost at home, you should not use waste such as orange peels, tangerine peels, eucalyptus leaves, lemongrass leaves, etc. because these types contain essential oils, affecting the decomposition process of the compost batch.

Step 2: Choose a container for organic fertilizer

We need to prepare a container such as a plastic container, a wooden container, etc. with a capacity of about 20-120 liters. Note that you should drill small holes in the body of the container to allow for drainage.

Step 3: Determine a suitable location for the container

Because the container for organic fertilizer often causes odors, the location of the container needs to be far from the living area and have a lot of sunlight, to promote faster decomposition of waste. Especially in a place with drainage.

Step 4: How to mix organic waste

After classifying green manure and brown manure. In this step, we need to divide it into small steps as follows:

+ Step 1: First, spread a thick layer of brown manure.

+ Step 2: Next is a thin layer of green manure.

+ Step 3: Finally, spread a thick layer of brown manure.

+ Step 4: Mix the mixture well and incubate for 2 weeks.

+ Step 5: After 2 weeks, start watering the compost mixture. Next, we need to mix well and spread a layer of brown compost on the surface to fill the container.

Note: Check the humidity of the container by holding the compost mixture tightly with your hand. If you see water dripping through your fingers, add straw. If you hold it and see loose, loose trash, add water. If you see the mixture sticking together, it proves that the humidity is satisfactory.

After about 30 days, the mixture in the compost batch has decomposed into organic fertilizer and will have the following characteristics:

  • The compost will turn brown and smell like soil.

  • The compost will crumble like humus, meaning that it has completely decomposed. And it can be used to fertilize plants.

In particular, organic fertilizer can be pressed into pellets. These organic fertilizer pellets are slow-dissolving, helping plants absorb nutrients better. Avoid being washed away and have better efficiency than regular fertilizers.

However, there is one thing that we really need to pay attention to, when sowing seeds, we should not use Compost from organic waste. Because Compost contains a lot of water and has a high mineral salt content, preventing the germination process of seeds. When the plant has started to grow, this is the time to use Compost, to provide nutrients, stimulate the growth of the plant.

In the past, waste was considered to be things that had no use value. Besides using organic foods in daily meals, treating waste by making Compost is one of the methods to protect and build a healthy and safe living environment. Hopefully, after referring to Nanoen's article, everyone will be able to apply it themselves and have clean, safe organic foods at home and not worry about food safety issues. Wish everyone success!
