Many people have told Thu: "Girls can't do boys' jobs", and "Environmental Engineering is only for men"... just because they know she loves and applies for the Environmental Engineering major!
Engineer – Le Anh Thu
When she was young, Le Anh Thu loved environmental protection activities and volunteer activities for the community, so despite many opinions advising or discouraging her, Thu was determined to take the exam and pass the major she had dreamed of. After 4 years of studying with all her passion for learning and training, Thu was honored to receive a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering degree, class 41, from Can Tho University.
Confident and eager to soon develop her knowledge of the profession she was trained in, right after graduation, Thu optimistically knocked on the doors of many companies and units specializing in the Environmental field. But in response to Thu's aspirations and sincerity, there was only silence, or a blunt refusal... not accepting female environmental majors! In disappointment and discouragement, Thu suddenly remembered her time in the classroom, despite her great efforts, she still encountered great difficulties when approaching real projects... And Thu had searched many times in books and on the internet to discover many things out there, which were still strange to her! Thanks to that, her knowledge, belief in her career and direction have never faded in her mind.
Thu suddenly realized that perhaps many people still have incorrect thinking about the Environmental industry, especially for women. According to them, when talking about the Environmental industry, they imagine those people having to stick to the construction site all day, having to wear protective gear, wearing black boots, their bodies covered in grease; even having many "characteristic" smells of wastewater, sewer water... In reality, that is not necessarily the case! In addition to the installation work, touching all the environmental work as they think, the industry Thu pursues also has many other jobs related to thinking and intelligence. That is system design, technical drawings on the computer, quotations, estimates, etc. These jobs are only for those who know how to appreciate customers, love and are determined to overcome the difficulties of work and of themselves! Explaining this to themselves, Thu has more motivation to ….continue to find her promised land!
A while later, luck smiled on her when she applied and was accepted for a probationary period at NANO Environment Technology – Construction Limited Liability Company (hereinafter referred to as Nanoen). Here, I had the opportunity to gain practical experience and access all kinds of projects. More importantly, I was able to supplement my knowledge and practical skills through the company's periodic reports; participate in training courses, supplement technical expertise; broaden my vision and be oriented towards long-term career development. Knowledge and practical experience are accumulated every day, helping me master my professional career and truly mature a lot.
Thu also participated in Team-Building activities to strengthen the bond between members; and without knowing when, this place has truly become her second family!
If we just list out the easy way to success like that, many of you will probably pout…
In fact, like most other new graduates, with mainly theoretical knowledge and life experience, little practical experience; if they cannot withstand the pressure of finding a job, the difficulties of work and life, the initial challenges of the sun and rain… job seekers easily give up their previous big dreams to either return to live on the “great” support of their parents, or choose an easy job, as long as they have income, regardless of whether it is suitable for their profession or not! And so, the rate of unemployed graduates, or those working in the wrong profession, increases!
At first, the Company sent me to contact and collaborate with the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources, Can Tho University. I am very honored to have Mr. Le Hoang Viet (Deputy Head of the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources) support and guide the operation of technology experimental models before deploying and applying them in practice. Thanks to that, I have been equipped with valuable knowledge and am also more confident in investing in promoting technical initiatives, being able to propose and calculate environmental treatment projects myself. To do these great tasks, I have worked hard and researched until midnight, which has become a daily meal.
A woman who works hard, her husband will not let her down! With my tireless efforts, I was trusted by the company's leadership and assigned to make the first technical drawing. I really like this job, always hoping that my drawings, when constructed and put into operation, will contribute to environmental protection. Accepting the task of making the drawing means that I have affirmed my professional position! I could not hold back my tears and quickly called my parents to tell them the good news. The two grandparents in the countryside, far away in Ca Mau, could not hide their happiness when hearing the news, considering it the result, the success of more than twenty years of raising and educating their children!
However, the first time making the drawing, Thu received a lot of comments and had to revise it many times; to the point that she herself wanted to give up because of frustration and helplessness. Faced with so many comments and criticisms, Thu felt like she could not bear it! Thu cried a lot; partly because she felt sorry for herself, partly because she felt so incompetent, why did she always make unnecessary mistakes. She even compared, in a 24-hour day, she only slept 4-5 hours; most of the remaining time she spent perfecting the drawing, why didn't people understand, didn't encourage her but instead criticized her? At times like that, Thu remembers her childhood dream, remembers the many words of dissuasion when she knew she was going to choose the Environmental major, and remembers the choked, happy tone of her parents when they heard Thu's good news of being assigned an important responsibility... So Thu stood up, determined to choose a strong path for herself instead of being depressed and discouraged like that! Finally, she succeeded! Once again, I affirm that to be successful, one must be passionate and make every effort!
After two years of working and being attached to this place, I am now a female engineer, a key employee of Nanoen Company. I have designed technical drawings of large and small projects and am constantly improving my skills and knowledge of the Environmental industry. I am very grateful to the leadership and my colleagues in the company for always creating the most favorable conditions for me to promote my capacity and develop myself; not being constrained by the requirements to do this or that. The leadership always listens to my suggestions and those of other members about new directions, new technologies, and innovations in working methods; everyone is free to express themselves, making the members' enthusiasm always burn brightly! And jokingly... the male engineers in the unit no longer distinguish between male and female engineers in terms of career or work, if anything, it is just respect because their talented colleagues are the graceful beauties that many men dream of being a couple!
Looking at the new employees, I see my old image with so much desire to contribute, but immature and clumsy. Sharing my story, Thu wants to convey to students, especially female students who are still in school, to always try to study and practice really well, really well in any field! For your own future, keep striving!
